Overview
While Sierra Chart offers detailed trade logging, many traders will export data for further analysis.
For tracking trade metrics either export data from Sierra to another app or service, OR use a service that can connect to Sierra Chart (or your data/broker trade data).
Pasting into Excel or Google Sheets is common. There are a small handful of Sierra Chart trade analyzers available, however it’s “easier” to paste or connect into a journaling platform. At the time of this publishing the creator doesn’t have one public, but check the website HERE if it’s been added.
Trade Log Overview
The majority of trading performance metrics are accessed through the Sierra Chart Trade Activity Log.
- Title Bar: Trade > Trade Activity Log
Trades Tab: Select Date Range, Accounts, P/L Format, and any additional settings to view a list of all trades. Simulated trades can be viewed as well. Once Trades tab is selected Hit Edit > Flat to Flat Display for Trades List
Statistics Tab: Shows a summarized snapshot of trading performance metrics
Edit title: Used for manually exporting data from various tabs. Also, make sure to refresh the log if figures don’t appear correct.
AccStats: Shows account stats by symbol for the specified date range, counts trades, and quantity filled
Trade Log Export
The majority of trading performance metrics are accessed through the Sierra Chart Trade Activity Log.
Statistics overview, trades, trade activity, and account performance can be viewed and exported.
To get started:
- On title bar hit Trade > Trade Activity Log
- Click the tab of desired trading data to export. Commonly use [*Trades]
- Click Edit on title bar, select Copy All
- The data is now on the clipboard, and can be pasted anywhere else, such as Excel
Tip: If the data pastes all into one cell, the data needs to “Text to Columns” in Excel.
- Select the cell with all data
- Click Data tab in Excel
- Text To Columns, and delimit by “,” (comma, as the format is CSV)
- Apply
Real Time Metrics - 3 Options
- Title bar: Trade > Trade Orders Window , and Trade Positions Window. This shows order and position info live
- Use studies on chart graphs. Open the Chart Studies window on any chart, and select studies such as: Daily Profit/Loss, Profit/Loss Text, Maximum Drawdown, Position Average Price
- DTC Protocol Server (Advanced)
Trade Log Files
Trades are saved in a file:
User/SierraChart/TradeActivityLogs folder
Creating a Custom Daily Profit and Loss Equity Chart
It is possible to have custom equity charts within Sierra. Candlesticks, lines, and more.
- Title Bar: Global Settings > Symbol Settings
- New
- Type any name “Equity_Curve”
- OK
Now open up any chart or create a new one
- Title Bar: Chart Settings > [Symbol] Tab > Symbol
- Change the value to the newly created symbol “Equity_Curve”
- Switch to the [Bar Period] tab
- Change the Value for Chart Data Type to Historical Chart
- OK
- Title Bar: Edit > Edit Data - Historical Chart
- Paste in values. These must be derived yourself either using something like Excel or within Sierra Chart.
IT IS CRITICAL TO LEAVE A BLANK LINE AT THE BOTTOM OF THE NOTEPAD ++ FILE EDITOR. USE RETURN KEY TO ADD AN EXTRA LINE
- Title Bar: Edit > Reload and Recalculate (or ‘Insert’ button shortcut)
Note: When changing settings for the Equity Curve symbol, consider selecting Custom Symbols. Ensure the Custom button is selected and has a name.
Note: The Historical Chart uses the following parameters when graphing data, pasted in a string:
- Open
- High
- Low
- Close
- Volume
- Open Interest
Example of 1 row:
2022/04/20, 5000, 5100, 4090, 5050, 1, 1
[Open, High, Low, Close, Volume, Open Interest]
